I'm a former newspaper reporter who is staying home for a while to raise my daughter. I love to cook and recently decided to become more adventurous in the kitchen. I will share my culinary successes and failures with this blog -- and plenty of recipes, too.
Yeah, it's amazing how much better freshly ground pepper tastes than that pre-ground stuff that restaurants put on the tables. I love watching my Basic Foods students when we do our spice tasting and they taste freshly ground pepper side by side with pre-ground.
My husband puts hot sauce on just about everything. It's crazy! I don't use it too much, but I do love chipotle Tabasco and that super-hot chili garlic sauce.
Definitely olive oil. I can cook without salt in a pinch, as it were (you can get by with soy sauce, for example), but I couldn't imagine life without good olive oil. Sauteeing, marinating, dressing, dipping... all depend on it.

Salt. Absolutely. It goes in everything.
And you literally can't live without it.
Salt is a pretty important part of all my cooking, too! I also LOOOOOVE freshly ground black pepper. I put it on almost everything.
